'A minute on the lips, a lifetime on the hips.' When we sip the Kool-Aid, it is hard to think of anything but the sweetness. But flip to the back of the package and we are quickly reminded its lack of all nutritional value. How much more do our words and actions, spoken deliciously in the heat of the moment, wither from our mouths. In Ephesians, Paul tells us to "not let any unwholesome talk come out of [our] mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up..." The destiny of God's gospel was to reach the nations. Paul was certain of this. Even from his prison cell, Paul spoke God's promise to raise leaders from unbelievers. Even in lockdown, we can be filled with the same joy and peace as Paul - for though the times may change, God is unchanging. Look at the birds...No strife or fear. Why then should we worry? How much greater does our Heavenly Father care for us? Paul tells us to take heart. In prison, surrounded by problems and persecution, and yet Paul is full of spirit. He is locked in to God’s peace. This pandemic has brought great challenges and great opportunity. To put aside pettiness and score keeping, and to promote peace in our family.

This morning we start a study of Philippians - Paul’s own mental health handbook. It’s a place we can find encouragement and hope. A place we can find God’s real peace - and make that peace our reality. Walk slowly with us, as we discover Philippians - Locked In To God’s Peace.

We complete our mini-series on A United State with a rallying cry. With a call that the Holy Spirit will be in our prayers and in our practice. We pray that like so many great voices before, God places tender hearts within us, in creating A New Birth of Freedom for all.
